Direct Connect through the Internet

There are several things that can affect direct connection through the Internet.
  • IP vs. Hostname - When direct connection goes through the Internet, you normally need to use host IP address (or router IP if there is one) rather than hostname unless your host name is reachable from the Internet that is very rare.
  • Dynamic IP - If your host computer connects to the Internet using dynamic IP you need to know the correct IP address when connecting. The best way to find the IP address in this case is to open http://www.whatismyip.com/. Depending on your provider, the IP address can be stable in many days or it can be changed a few times within a day. Client computer IP address does not affect connection.
  • Router Setup - If your host computer is behind a router like in majority of situations, you will need to setup router port forwarding. This could be a little complicated for regular users. Client side router does not affect connection. If there is a router in the front of host computer, the client will try to connect to your router because the host computer is not directly reachable from the Internet. You will use the router IP on the direct connect dialog of the client program. You can get the router IP by opening http://www.whatismyip.com/. When you router receive requests from your client, it needs to forward to your host computer. You have to setup router forwarding in order for the router to forward the requests. Your router should come with a utility program for router setup. Using the utility program, you should be able to tell the router to forward a port (so called "public port", e.g. 6229) to the host computer (ip and a port so called "private port"). The private port must be the same as that your host program is listening on. The public port is the one you entered on the direct connection dialog of the client program. We suggest not to use public port 80, because many providers block that port.
  • Antivirus and personal firewalls - If you are using them you may also need to setup them to allow TeleDesktop connection to pass. During testing, you may want to disable them in order to simplify things.
If you have difficulty to get connected, we suggest to use SBC connection.
